We’re Sandra and Florian. When you order matcha from us today, you’re not just choosing tea. You’re choosing more than 20 years of experience and the assurance that our selection includes only varieties that we ourselves would happily serve in our own cups.

The moment when everything turned green

Our story began in 2005 at our tea lounge in Frankfurt. Back then, matcha was still a real hidden gem in Europe. When a Japanese producer introduced us to this bright green powder, we were captivated from the very first sip. Not because it was a trend, but because of that special feeling: clear alertness, sharp focus, and a calm serenity all at once.

We could tell right away: This isn’t just a passing fad. It’s a new way to live a more mindful modern life.

A Pioneering Spirit Led to Expertise

In 2011, we took the next step and launched the online store matchashop.de. At a time when matcha still required a lot of explanation, we opened Europe’s first specialty matcha store in Berlin just two and a half years later. To do so, we left behind secure careers in IT and retail and decided to become self-employed—out of a love for the product and a desire to bring authentic Japanese quality to Germany.

Straight from Japan and close to the people behind it

For many years, we have cultivated direct, close, and long-standing relationships with tea farmers in Japan. We import many of our teas ourselves and know the story behind every gram. When we talk about “Purism” or “Performance,” we’re not just using fancy terms—we’re referring to the delicate interplay of origin, processing, flavor, and ingredients that can be a part of your everyday life.

On the go anywhere today, with German quality standards

These days, we spend a large part of the year traveling to different cities and regions. We usually spend our workdays on our laptops, making sure your matcha arrives fresh, authentic, and carefully packaged.

We’ve entrusted our shipping operations to experienced professionals in Berlin. This allows us to focus on what we do best: advising you and finding the best Japanese varieties for you.

Behind the bowl: 5 Things You Should Know About Us

So you know who you’re entrusting your morning ritual to, we’ll take you on a quick tour behind the scenes:

• The Grand Opening Just Before April Fools’ Day: Our first store in Berlin opened on March 31, 2014. We wanted to avoid anyone thinking on April 1 that a store dedicated solely to matcha couldn’t be serious. Here’s the punchline: We were very serious about it.
• Matcha Spätzle and Culinary Experiments: Back when we were just starting out in Heidelberg, hardly any idea was too unusual for us. From savory matcha spätzle to cocktails, we tried a lot of things. Not everything was a masterpiece, but that’s exactly why we now know exactly which variety pairs best with which ingredient.
• Focus Instead of a Vacation Vibe: We live a location-independent lifestyle, but our workdays aren’t spent on the beach or under the Eiffel Tower—they’re spent in front of our screens. For us, this freedom means one thing above all else: ensuring German reliability and the highest quality for your matcha experience, no matter where we are.
• Our favorite drinks: Sandra has been a fan of her summer favorite from the very beginning: an iced matcha latte with vanilla soy milk and a splash of mango syrup. But she also regularly enjoys the hot version with coconut milk. Florian prefers to drink matcha as a matcha latte with oat milk or as a small, strong energy shot. When drinking it plain, we both like very different varieties, depending on the moment and our mood.
